Dr Niket Patel is a Consultant Cardiologist & Interventionalist who looks after private privates at specialist clinics and hospitals across London. He is an experienced expert in looking after adults with cardiac conditions and sub-specialises in all aspects of complex interventional cardiology (coronary angioplasty / stenting). He is a substantive NHS consultant at the Royal Free Hospital, a large teaching hospital in Hampstead, London. The Royal Free Hospital has high volume coronary catheter labs where Dr Patel also performs primary PCI (emergency treatment for heart attacks). Additionally, he looks after in-patients with a wide range of cardiac conditions at the Royal Free and at Barnet Hospital sites. He is responsible for training cardiology trainees and interventional fellows in all aspects of general cardiology and coronary intervention at the Royal Free Hospital and was recently the cardiology module and year 4 lead for University College London Medical School medical students at Barnet Hospital. He is an Associate Honorary Professor at University College London. His research interests are in coronary physiology, microvascular function, intra-coronary imaging and myocardial infarction. Furthermore, Dr Patel is an investigator for several international trials, has published over 30 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and has authored over 20 scientific abstracts.

Clinical expertise

Dr Niket Patel is a specialist in Cardiology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He is an experienced physician proficient in investigating and looking after patients with cardiac symptoms or cardiovascular health concerns including patients suffering with chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness and episodes of blackout or fainting. He has also sub-specialized in Interventional Cardiology which uses catheter based techniques via the major arteries of the body (through small holes in the arteries) to investigate (angiography and other invasive assessment of the heart) and treat coronary disease (coronary stenting including rotablation, bifurcation PCI, intravascular imaging, etc.)
Dr Niket Patel's interests include:
Treatment of ischaemic heart disease, angina (chest pain) and heart attack
Treatment of heart failure (breathlessness), arrhythmia (palpitations), black outs, atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure and valvular heart disease (murmurs)
Management of primary and secondary prevention (coronary risk reduction)

Training

Dr Niket Patel studied medicine St George’s Hospital Medical School (2002) and graduated with first class honours BSc from Imperial College in Biological & Clinical Sciences (2001). He then completed general medical rotations including the Hammersmith SHO medical rotation and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005. He has completed specialisation in Cardiology and sub-specialisation in Coronary Intervention within the Northwest Thames London Deanery training programme, and furthermore has completed Interventional Fellowships at Harefield Hospital and the Oxford University Hospital. During this time he has also completed his doctoral thesis in the physiology of the coronary arteries in patients suffering from heart attack.

Research activity

Dr N Patel is an expert in coronary physiology and cardiac injury following heart attack. He has authored more than 50 research publications and is an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London. Furthermore, he is also a site investigator for clinical trials at the Royal Free Hospital. His research interests include:
